Work Experience Summary

Epic Games

Director, Engineering

User Identity Services

Nov  2022 - Apr 2026

I worked for Epic Games here in the UK, spending a couple of days a week in the London Studio when in the UK and travelling regularly to studios in the US and Canada.   In total, there were seven agile teams as part of this department, with their leads reporting into me.

Whilst leading the UIS Engineering team I was accountable for Epic's Account Services as well as Kids Web Services, a suite of tools to allow developers to keep their younger players safe in their online experience.

Working within a team required to respond to changes in legislation and regulation wherever in the world may be changing was a challenging but immensely fulfilling thing to do.

All developers (and many others outside development) in the team were regularly using AI tools to help speed up their work.

ComplyAdvantage

Director of Engineering

Nov  2022 - Apr 2026

Initially, I was responsible for the Transaction Monitoring team which produced a highly-configurable system allowing customers to define rules to spot transactions and  transaction patterns which may need flagging for investigation.

Over time, I also took on the Customer Screening and Ongoing Monitoring teams, responsible for providing solutions to analyse and react to interactions with individuals.

The team here was split across London and Romania, and I was working here when covid restrictions hit the UK and we had to all transition to remote-first working.

EXFO

Senior Manager, R&D

Feb 2017 - Dec 2019

Ontology

I joined Ontology Systems which was acquired by Exfo not long afterwards.   The Ontology team produced a configurable tool which allowed customers with large networks to model their networks in a graph database and then perform complex queries on that graph database to quickly identify the root cause of any observed symptoms in the network.

During my time here, I also lead a team based in Rennes, France and one in Valencia, Spain.  My visits to the Rennes office marked the first time I'd worked in a French-speaking environment.

It was here at Exfo that I had my first professional brush with AI too, as tools were being developed adjacent to my team to use AI to spot potential network issues before they became impacting.

OpenMarket

2011 - 2016

I lead the SMS and Gateways teams, eventually leading both the UK and US sides of the team.  We provided APIs to allow clients to send SMS messages to their own customers to interact with them.  This was use for 2FA, for registration of new hardware devices and for giving a channel for businesses to interact 2-way with their customers.

One of the challenges was to ensure that we maintained SMS connectivity to every country in the world, balancing the need for connectivity with the cost of using more expensive but more reliable routing.

This was also the first time I had lead a team responsible for 24/7 support of their software and also my first time leading a team based in a US office.

Symbian

1999 - 2010

The future direction of my career was forged during my time at Symbian.  I started as a C++ developer when I first moved to London and through taking on more responsibility and leadership accountability over my time there, I finished as the overall lead for SonyEricsson projects within the Symbian consulting team.

I was at Symbian working on the first touch-screen Smartphone (R380) right through until the final days of the Symbian Foundation.  It was a thrilling journey across many years and there were so many "firsts" and formative experiences for me here, that it's hard to list them.

SymbianOS may not be a relic of the past, but I'll never forget my time at Symbian!

Other Stuff

I've always had an interest in diversity and inclusion in the workplace, and through my own mental health journey throughout the years have written and spoken many times at the intersection of those two aspects of building and leading a team.

I have a degree in Mathematics from Cambridge and whilst I don't use much of the stuff I learned directly anymore, it did teach me how to think about a problem, the nature of proof and reinforced my impressive ability to play the Countdown Numbers game.
